Oberbegriff
Anwendungshinweise
- Intentional and coordinated actions aiming at the total -or to a great extent- annhihilation of a racial, ethnic, religious or social group. The term was used after World War II to designate a category of war crimes and has been adopted by international law. Its use in historiography, however, is problematic, since the conditions, under which mass killings emerge in history, are complex and often contradictory. Therefore, it is difficult to define typically some of those phenomena as genocides in contrast to others.
