Anwendungshinweise
- Reduced-weight silver tetradrachms that were introduced by the Attalid monarchs and circulated only within the Attalid dependent territories in Asia Minor. They owe their name to the depiction of the sacred chest (cista mystica) on the obverse of the first issues. The date of their introduction is still a matter of controversy, ranging from ca 192 to 155 BCE. Cistophori continued to be minted and circulated long after the kingdom was bequeathed to Rome in 133 BCE. During Roman times their local designs were gradually supplanted by imperial portraits and other Roman coin types.
