Scope note
-
Ethnoreligious Christian group of northeast Africa, mainly Egypt. The Copts have developed a distinct cultural identity as adherents of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, which can be traced back to the first Christian centuries. The Coptic language is mostly confined to liturgical service and most Copts are Arabic-speaking. The Copts constitute the largest religious minority in Egypt, while there are many Coptic diasporic communities all over the world.
