Scope note
- Bishop of a see with a special status within the historical development of Christianity, who is the head of an autocephalous ecclesiastical organisation (patriarchate). The patriarchal office, which goes back to the early Christian Churches (Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, Jerusalem), is in use today in the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Churches (mainly), a swell as in the Catholic Church.
