Broader concept

Scope note

  • The highest political office in nation states with a regime of presidential or parliamentary republic. In presidential republics (as the USA) and semi-presidential republics (as France), the president is elected through general elections and is the head of state and the head of the executive at the same time. In parliamentary republics, executive power rests with the prime minister and his/her cabinet, while the president is elected by parliament as the head of state, but his/her functions are rather ceremonial, in accordance with those of the king/queen in constitutional monarchies.
