Scope note
- High-ranking diplomat, representative of a state and head of a permanent diplomatic mission resident in the capital of another state or at an international organisation. The ambassador has the status of diplomatic immunity and represents his home country and its government in all matters of bilateral relations. The office of the ambassador as the permanently resident representative of a state originates in the Rennaissance and the early modern era. Today it is an essential part of the international system of interstate relations.
