Scope note
- An honor awarded to foreigners in ancient Athens. It involved granting foreigners the right to become Athenian citizens in recompense for outstanding services toward Athens. Citizenship was the highest honor that could be awarded to foreigners, and in some cases, it was also awarded to his descendants.
