Scope note
- Title attributed to a young woman of a noble family who participated in religious processions in antiquity. She occupied a prominent position in the procession carrying a canister (basket) with offerings and the necessary utensils for the sacrifice. The number of kanephoroi who participated in the various religious processions (Dionysian, Panathenaic etc.) was not fixed.
