Scope note
- A speciality of medicine concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and study of mental diseases or disorders. Psychiatry was formed as a self-conscious scientific project in the late 18th century, through the development of new techniques for treating "madness" and the making of a new institution, mental hospital or asylum, which was considered the appropriate setting and an active instrument for the cure of "madness", until, by and large, the end of the 19th century.
