Scope note
- Wars in which irregulars engage in fast-moving, small-scale actions against orthodox military and police forces and, on occasion, against rival insurgent forces, either independently or in conjunction with a larger strategy. Over the centuries those engaged in guerilla warfare have been hailed as freedom fighters by their supporters (often local populations) and sympathizers of their cause, or stigmatized as brigands, mercenaries.and terrorists by their adversaries.
