Scope note
- Organised public displays of agricultural, industrial, scientific and/or artistic products, in order to promote the production, commerce and culture internationally and to stimulate the public's interest. During their first period, between 1851 and 1939, they reflected both the emerging internationalism and the antagonism among imperialistic powers. At the same time they functioned as the main sites for the advertising and commercialisation of science, incorporating and propagating the ideology of progress and technological utopianism.
