Scope note
- Members of the urban population in the Ionian Islands under Venetian rule. The popolari were an intermediate group between the "citizens" (cittadini) and the peasants and did not constitute a recognised social order. They included the various professionals and artisans, as well as the merchants, the tax farmers, and the members of the liberal professions, provided they were excluded from the group of the cittadini. The popolari, in particular their upper strata, were in conflict with the cittadini and pushed for participation in the communal offices and the administration.
