Scope note
- Science that studies animals, including their anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, genetics, ecology, evolution and behaviour. The term "zoology" as the general science of animals emerged during the 18th century with the spliting of natural history into distinct branches. However, already from the 16th and 17th centuries, the study of animals and subfields like ornithology and entomology were the subject of independent studies.
