Scope note
- The field that makes science the object of sociological analysis. It includes mainly two different research areas, the traditional sociology of knowledge, that focuses on the institutional context and social organisation and function of science as provider of certified knowledge, and the sociology of scientific knowledge, which focuses on the sociological examination of the very content of scientific knowledge. It includes also studies that emphasise the cognitive and cultural authority of scientists and their linkages with power, politics and economy.
