Scope note
- Long and narrow rowing warships or cargo ships, which dominated Mediterranean marine life from the Middle Ages until the 17th century. Their length/width ratio was about 8/1. Their moving power was provided by the numerous oarsmen lined up along the length of the hull, but they also had sails for additional propelling power. War galleys were equipped with fire guns at the prow.
