Broader concept
Scope note
- Small silver coins equivalent to 1/6 of the drachm. According to the Attic weight standard the obol was subdivided into eight chalkoi, while according to the Aeginetan one into twelve chalkoi. Bronze obols seem also to have been in existence from the 2nd c. BCE onwards. Obols were originally spits of copper or bronze traded by weight, while six obols made a drachma or a handful, since that was as many as the hand could grasp.
