Scope note
- Roman silver coins that were first introduced by Caracalla in 215 CE. Although antoniniani were valued at 2 denarii their weight was equal only to 1.5 denarii. On the obverse of the antoniniani the emperor is depicted wearing a radiate crown and empresses are shown with a lunar crescent beneath their bust. Their weight and silver content were gradually decreased until they were totally replaced by the aureliani in 274 CE.
