Scope note
- Assemblies of high ecclesiastical officials and theologians with the purpose of making and enforcing decisions on issues of dogma, religious practice and ecclesiastical organisation. The synods as major ecclesiastical events (among which the Ecumenical Synods of late antiquity were prominent) are to be distinguished from the notion of synod as a collective body of officials that belongs to the governing institutions of a Church.
