Broader concept
Scope note
- Person who assumes the duties of the monarch if the latter is unable to do so (usually because he/she is a minor). Sometimes the regent assumes the rule during periods of interregnum. In theory, the regent (who does not necessarily belong to the nobility) cannot claim any rights to the throne and is relieved of power as soon as the conditions, under which the regent was appointed, cease to exist.
