Scope note
- Groups of people who share science as their common research or professional interest and pursuit, and aim at the communication among their members, as well as the advancement, occasionally dissemination to broader audiences, and/or professional demarcation of their discipline or science in general. A first kind of scientific societies were the scientific academies of the 17th century that had a crucial role in the social organisation of science. In the early 19th century many scientific societies, which specialised in particular scientific fields, emerged, contributing significantly to the professionalisation of sciences.
