Scope note
- The arrangement of distinct elements within a work of art in a cohesive way that turns them into a meaningful and formal unity. In the classical tradition, triangular or pyramidal compositions were used because they created a sense of balance and harmony by arranging the figres into a stable overall geometric structure. To the extend that modern art rejected that tradition, the idea of correct composition was revised or even abandoned.
