Broader concept
Entry terms
- Sephardic Jews
Scope note
- Jews of the Iberian Peninsula who were expelled from their homes in the late 15th and during the 16th century, after the demise of the last Islamic states in the region. The term "Sephardi Jews" refers to the refugees themselves, who settled at first in regions of the central and eastern Mediterranean, and subsequently in regions of western Europe and America, but also to their descendants, who formed a distinct ethno-cultural group with its own Romance (ladino, known also as "Judeo-Spanish"), folk and elite traditions, social structures and networks.
