Scope note
- Coins that were made by striking. The blank flans were heated to soften and then the first minter took the heated flan and held it in place between the two dies, the fixed one, the anvil, and the moveable one, the character, while a second minter struck with a hammer. Thus, the blank flan was stamped with the representations on the dies. The majority of ancient coins were struck.
