Scope note
- Τhe earliest coinage of Athens. They are so called because they depicted a wide range of types once thought to be emblems of powerful Athenian families. The series consists of silver didrachms, subsidiary denominations and later on tetradrachms, that were intended for local use. Heraldic coins were first introduced around 546 BCE and were replaced by the glaukes towards the end of the sixth century BCE.
