Scope note
- The gold Byzantine solidi that received this new name when the slightly lighter gold tetartera were introduced during the reign of Nikephoros II (963-969 CE). From the reign of Basil II (976-1025 CE) onwards the histamena changed in form from the original solidi, becoming wider and thinner, as well as concave. In the 12th c. CE the name stamenon came to be applied to a billon coin of low value.
