Scope note
- Scientific organisations housed in buildings or sites where regular observations of celestial bodies and phenomena are made with special instruments, such as telescopes. Observatories focus on scientific research, although occasionally they may be transformed into sites of observation and spectacle (of celestial phenomena) for the wide public, a function that was quite popular in the 19th century.
