Scope note
- An honor awarded to Athenian citizens and foreigners in ancient Athens. The state crowned the honored persons with wreaths of ivy, laurel, olive tree branches or gold, the cost of the latter was defined by the state and was written on honorary decrees where the decision of the Assembly was recorded. The reasons for awarding the prize were also briefly stated. The public award of the wreath took place after a public proclamation at one of the city festivals.
