Preferred term
2441Hospitality (privilege in ancient Athens)
Broader concept
Scope note
- Hospitality was one of the privileges granted to foreigners (proxenoi, ambassadors, etc.) in ancient Athens in recompense for outstanding services toward the city. Though it is not clear precisely what the term implies, it probably means that the foreigner was cared for. The grant of this privilege was registered in the honorific decree which recorded the resolution of the Assembly.
