Scope note
- Meteorological instrument for measuring humidity in the atmosphere. A first version was constructed in the 15h century. However, the scientific character of the hygrometer was established in the 18th century, contributing to the development of meteorology. The hygrometer for determining humidity by the motion of a piece of animal matter, such as hair or ivory, was very popular in the 18th century.
