Scope note
- Devices for recording and reproducing sound by means of a stylus needle vibrating in grooves carved into a cylinder or disc, whose rotation was powered by hand or a clockwork motor. The phonograph appeared in the 19th century as a scientific curiosity, and by the early 20th century it had become a key component technology of the entertainment industry.
