Scope note
- State organizations with large territory and expansionary claims, which rule over peoples and populations that differ in ethnic, religious and cultural terms, and incorporate them in the state through various political and economic patterns. Empires can be territorially continuous, governed by a monarch and legitimized by the imperial dynasty, or they can be colonial powers that are governed by a metropolitan centre in the form of a nation-state.
