Scope note
- A movement in french painting, characterized by the use of a bright palette, broken brushwork, and an emphasis on depictions of contemporary life and landscape. Impressionists, as Realists, rejected the restrictions of traditional subjects in favor of the visible contemporary world. But they intensified the real-time immediacy of their focus, objectivity, and an interest in monitoring and understanding the eye’s perceptions.
