Scope note
- Inscriptions which the craftsmen carved on objects they constructed. The content of the text usually comprises a phrase by which the craftsman declares who is the creator of the work. The use of the inscription, besides the attribution of the work to the creator, sometimes takes on another meaning, as in the case of the architects (masons), whose signature certified the completion of the works.
