- Ena izmed treh stopenj "redkosti", ki jih opisuje Mednarodna zveza za varstvo naravnih virov (The International Union of the Conservation of Natural Resources). Vse rastline in živali v teh kategorijah potrebujejo posebno zaščito. Ogrožene vrste so tiste vrste, ki jim grozi izumrtje, razen, če se uvede določene ukrepe, ki to spremenijo.
