Concept information

remote sensing survey > airborne sensing > aerial photography

Preferred term

aerial photography

Definition

  • The taking of photographs from above using photographic equipment mounted on, or used from an aircraft or other airborne vehicle. The archaeological interpretation of aerial images enables us to observe and recognise archaeological features that are preserved on the surface or are projected on the surface due to specific sub-surface layers. These are features that are not visible or comprehensive, and they get a new meaning if we observe them from the height in a wider spatial context.
